Injury and Recovery

Injuries and setbacks are a common part of an athlete's journey. Athletes often have to handle emotions like anger, disappointment, anxiety, and sadness while they take time off to heal and face an uncertain future. Counseling can be crucial in helping athletes develop effective coping strategies to overcome both the physical and emotional challenges of the recovery process. Counseling empowers athletes to set realistic goals, foster a positive mindset, and build resilience for their return to their sport.

Self Limiting Beliefs

Whether chasing big and scary goals or enjoying the daily pursuit of your sport, self-belief and confidence are essential for athletes. Unfortunately,  many people carry negative self-perceptions that affect their performance and well-being. Through counseling, athletes can learn to challenge negative thought patterns, cope with stress and anxiety, and build mental strength, resilience, and confidence. If you are ready to to improve your confidence to set a goal that at first seems impossible or to get yourself to that first run club to meet others in the sport, counseling can help with developing a positive mindset to take your next steps.

Athlete Identity

For many people who are passionate about their sport and its role in their lives, being an athlete becomes a central, if not the primary, part of their identity. While being an athlete often contributes to a healthy identity by strengthening self-confidence, self-discipline, and positive connections with others, athletes may face challenges when they over-identify solely as athletes. Retirement, career-altering injuries, and significant life transitions can disrupt their lives and lead to uncertainty and self-doubt when athletes neglect other important aspects of their identity. Engaging in skilled exploration with a trained counselor can help individuals celebrate and emphasize their 'athlete self' while exploring other meaningful identity elements to live a more balanced and fulfilling life.
